Chapter Twenty

Andrew Willcox took off his linen sport coat, turned it inside out and placed it over his arm, and waited as the limo driver put his luggage into the trunk. He breathed in the warm desert air.

The driver held the back door open. “Sir?”

Willcox slid into the deep, tufted gray leather seat and turned on the TV to catch the local Phoenix weather report. He had a tee time early the next morning.

“Where to, sir?”

“Tarrington, out past Carefree.” Willcox sat back to enjoy the forty-five-minute ride to the rural community north of Phoenix. He’d actually be seeing her in less than an hour. He could hardly wait. It had been so long. He fingered the long jewelry box in his breast pocket.

The ring of his cell phone interrupted his reverie. “What?” he snapped.

“I took care of the broad last night,” Vic Jones announced flatly.

Willcox sat up. “Huh?”

“Had a little meeting with her in a dark parking lot.”

“And?”

“And I don’t think we should expect any more trouble from her or the blonde.”

Willcox hung up and exhaled slowly. Thank God. His stomach did a flip-flop as he looked up and saw the sign welcoming him to Carefree slide past outside the tinted window. Just fifteen minutes more.

—

Willcox strode toward the lavish luxury VIP suite of Rebekkah’s Manor. A hush fell over the nurses’ station as he walked by. The ward was decorated in a Caribbean theme, with bright splashes of hot pink and turquoise and a number of seascapes.

“Hello, Doctor.” The nurse’s accent matched the Caribbean décor. “You’re here early.”

“Good morning.” Willcox tried to be civil, but he was too excited for small talk. It had been so long.

“Rebekkah is going to be so excited to see you. And what beautiful orchids! I’ll go get a vase.”

Willcox whisked down the hall and into the entryway of the huge suite. The walls were hand-painted with a trompe l’oeil scene of a tropical garden, and the carpet was a rich green. The effect was stunning. Willcox felt as if he were entering his own secret garden. He paused and stared at the tiny woman curled up in the pink satin sheets he’d given her for her birthday.

“Mother?” he whispered.

A pair of blue eyes fluttered open and closed from deep within the woman’s chalky gray face.

He gently took her hand and ran his forefinger up and down the lacy purple veins. “I’m here, Mother.” He knelt at her side.

She smiled and squeezed his hand weakly.

It gave him butterflies.

“It shouldn’t be long, Mother.”

The woman looked up and motioned her son to help her sit.

He lurched for the intercom. “Get someone in here now! We need some pillows. Feather pillows. Hurry up!”

Once she was situated, he removed the thin strand of diamonds from the box and hooked them at the back of her neck. He handed her a mirror.

She placed her open palm over the necklace and smiled. “It’s lovely.”

He kissed her cheek, remembering her thick, flowing blond hair. She had been spectacular in her younger days.
